As a composer-led publication, PRXLUDES is co-run by UK-based directors Zygmund de Somogyi and Patrick Ellis, alongside a small team of contributors. Learn about who we are here:

Directors

Zygmund de Somogyi – founder, artistic director (they/them)

Zygmund de Somogyi is a British-Filipino composer, interdisciplinary artist, and music journalist currently based in London. Since 2020, they’ve served as the founder and current Artistic Director of PRXLUDES. They’re passionate about grassroots musical communities, speculative worldbuilding, metamodernism, punk rock, and dogs.

Their creative work has been platformed by the Royal Philharmonic Society, Arc Project, and Guildhall Opera Department in association with the Royal Ballet & Opera, among others; as well as internationally with the Composers Conference (US), Access Contemporary Music Chicago (US), and Gaudeamus Muziekweek (NL).

Patrick Ellis – creative director (he/him)

Patrick Ellis (b. 1994, UK) is a composer, performer and curator based in London.

Since 2023, Patrick has been the creative director for PRXLUDES. His contributions have included over 30 interviews with emerged and esteemed artists, ensembles and organisations.

I am a composer, performer and writer based in London and currently studying my masters in Composition at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I work mostly with graphic, open and text score formats and improvisation, play and collaboration are central to all creative my practices. I am passionate about the accessibility of the arts, the importance of community and all things people!

Sofia Jen Ouyang (she/her)

Sofia Jen Ouyang is a New York-based composer whose work explores the expressive and philosophical dimensions of sound as a site of entanglement, identity, and being. Her music has been performed by ensembles including Ensemble Modern, JACK Quartet, Wet Ink Ensemble, Riot Ensemble, Juilliard Orchestra, and New York Virtuoso Singers, at venues such as Lucerne Festival, Lincoln Center, MATA Festival, Frankfurt Oper, and the Arvo Pärt Center.

Currently, Sofia serves as Music Director of Westside Chamber Players and is pursuing her DMA at Columbia University, where she studies with Marcos Balter and Georg Friedrich Haas. She holds bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and music from Columbia University and studied composition with Andrew Norman and Amy Beth Kirsten at The Juilliard School.

Finn Mattingly (he/him)

Finn Mattingly is a Munich-based composer from New Hampshire who’s music explores the intersection of absurdist art, bluegrass rhythmic play, false projections of the overtone spectrum, and the physiology of performance practice in contemporary music.

He was a Humphrey Searle Scholar at the Royal College of Music in London under Kenneth Hesketh, Simon Holt, and Jonathan Cole, and has additionally studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music with Bent Sørensen and Marcela Lucatelli.

Marisse Cato (she/her)

Marisse Cato is a London-born composer and scholar working with theorising contemporaneity, sounding its paradoxes, rifts and processes in unassuming coexistence.

Currently based in Boston studying a PhD in Music at Harvard University with Vijay Iyer, Chaya Czernowin, Yvette Janine Jackson and Jessie Cox, her practice involves both composing for acoustic instruments and electronics alongside multimedia and collaborative projects. Her work includes concerns of contemporariness, diaspora, and blackness as an ever-evolving practice under racialised capitalism. Her work has been performed by ensembles including Yarn//Wire (US), Airborne Extended (AUT), and Siglo de Oro (UK) for whom she is their 2025-27 Composer-in-Residence, among others.
